Cisco Security Device Manager (SDM)
I am going to make certain assumptions about your skill level before you start this lab. For example, there is a link to the .zip file for the SDM program. I am not going to tell you how to download it, extract it to your desktop and then figure out how to run the setup.exe.
There are other things too that I won't walk you through...step-by-step. However, if you do have questions please ask. Ready... Go.
Step 1 - Install SDM to your computer only. Download it from the Cisco Technician Resources link.
When you get a router fresh out of the box, its all setup for you and ready to run SDM. Because students have mucked about with these routers they need to be reconfigured. Once you have SDM installed to your computer you will need to prep the router so that SDM can connect to it. You have two options.
Option 1 - Use TFTP to copy the SDM25\sdmconfig-18xx.cfg file to the router startup-config
You need to configure the router fa0/0 to be on the same network as your workstation. Any network IP address is fine.
copy tftp startup-config
Once this is done you need to reload the router. It will have a default address of 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.248 and you will need to change your workstation ip address to be on the same network using 10.10.10.2 255.255.255.248
Once that is done verify that each can ping the other.
Startup SDM
When you first console in you will need to change the username and password IMMEDIATELY. Failure to do so will result in you being locked out of the router. You will have to do a password recovery procedure to get back in.
The console session will timeout and when you try to log back in you it will fail. Because you already used the name and password once. So do not walk away or let the session timeout the first time.
The image below shows what will happen if you do not change you username and password immediately and allow the console session to timeout.
