PROGRAMS SYLLABUS

A syllabus is one of the most important documents in college programs but most students do not take it seriously or even read it.  Please take a few minutes and make sure you understand this document.

As a new student you are required to read and sign a letter of acknowledgment stating that you have read and understand the following documents.  Students who are not legal adults MUST have a parent or legal guardian sign.  You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed to view these documents.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Each program has its own description.  Please visit the Program Information page for each individual program.  These can be found under the PROGRAMS OFFERED link at mlatc.info.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

LOCK-STEP programs are what you are probably most familiar with.  These are the typical classroom setting where all students work on the same tasks at the same pace.  You probably experienced this in elementary and high school.  Most students are used to a lockstep method of instruction.  This is where the entire class moves at the same pace.  Assignments are given and due at the same time as well as exams.  Instructors lecture to the entire class.  Students needing more time do not get it and students wanting to move faster are usually not allowed.  Sometimes grades are given not on how well you know the material but on how well you can keep up.

INDEPENDENT STUDY is sometimes referred to as directed study. It is most usually when a student and a professor or teacher agree upon a topic for the student to further research outside of school with loose guidance from the instructor for an agreed upon amount of credits. Some programs give students a series of packets that must be completed.  Help is available from a tutor or instructor by scheduling an appointment.

OPEN ENTRY/OPEN EXIT (OE/OE) courses are a self-paced educational alternative designed for students who can master course material without traditional classroom instruction. With no traditional lectures or regularly scheduled class, you can complete a course in several weeks, a month, or a semester — it's up to you! These flexible courses are designed for the disciplined/motivated student allowing them greater control over their learning schedules.

  • This program is completed on an individual basis.  There are no "class lectures".  The instructor does not lecture to a group but rather answers questions as needed by individual students.
  • Each student is completing training for their own specific program and at their own pace.  There is no "class" to keep up with or to fall behind from.
  • Each program has a set number of days to complete.  You may move faster if you are able.
  • This program is for students who do not need constant monitoring to stay on task.  Self-motivated and self-disciplined students will succeed.  If you do not possess these skills you will fail this program.

We call our programs OEOE.  However there are a few notable differences to a traditional OEOE program.  If you need more time you may purchase additional tuition hours of up to 50% of the original allotted time.  For example, if a program is 180 hours and you do not finish in time you may purchase an additional 90 hours of tuition to complete the training.  There are regularly scheduled lab times.  Please check the Lab Schedule link for dates and times.

ATTENDANCE

10 absences in a row will result in immediate withdrawal from the program.

5 absences will result in a counseling statement and probation.

Students must maintain 90% attendance or risk being placed on probation.

Continued absences will result in a dismissal from the program.

Arriving late or leaving early 15 minutes or more  will be counted as an absence.

LAB CLOSURES

Every attempt is made to follow a set published schedule.  This schedule can be found on the CALENDAR link on the homepage of mlatc.info.  However, it is possible that due to unforeseen circumstances the lab may close without notice.  There is no refund or extension of hours or money for these times.

PROGRESS

Each program has a set number of hours that you are expected to complete the training in.  If you need more time you may purchase additional tuition hours up to 50% additional time of the original scheduled hours for that program.  For example, if you are in a program that is 180 clock hours long you can purchase an additional 90 hours if needed.

Failure to complete a program within the specified amount of time may result in unenrollment from that program.

PROGRESS REPORTING

Credit and letter grades are not issued by MATC.  A simple percentage based progress scale is used.  Letter grades for high school students are based on this.

A 95-100
A- 90-94
B+ 87-89
B 83-86
B- 80-82
C+ 77-79
C 72-76

High school students must maintain a %70 percent average or you risk being unenrolled and sent back to your high school.  An F is an immediate dismissal.

LATE WORK/MAKEUP WORK/EXTRA CREDIT

There is none.

GENERAL LAB GUIDELINES

  • No food or drink in the lab at any time.
  • Printing is not available in the lab.  If you need to print please do so at home.  It is simply too expensive to allow students to print.
  • The workstations in the lab are "frozen".  This means that changes you make while using them will be undone after a reboot.  Save your files to an online site or portable storage device.
  • Please answer your phone calls in the hall.  This means please answer them after you have left the lab.  It is very distracting to other students.
  • As funny and cool as your ring tone probably is...its not that funny or cool to everyone else.  Please turn your ringers off and answer any calls in the hallway.  Because there is no phone in the lab the instructor may need to answer calls.  As much as possible this will be done outside the lab as well.
  • Avoid txting while studying as it is distracting.  Excessive txting will be treated as a problem.
  • Please keep conversations at a low volume so as not to distract other students who may be studying for exams.  Please use your "inside voice" or whisper.
  • Do not use equipment without instructor supervision.
  • Please put away all tools/materials used for labs.
  • Students are not allowed in the lab without an instructor or lab manager present.
  • No children or unenrolled students are allowed during lab hours.
  • Students are encouraged to bring in PCs to work on but must pay for extra materials used to repair them.  Please coordinate with your instructor.
  • Any device that connects to the network must be cleared with the instructor first.  (laptops, smartphones, etc.)
